Data Validation Process

Aims of the Validation Study

Main aims of the validation study are:

  1. To validate the national ICU-surveillance data of nosocomial pneumonia (PN) and bacteraemia (BAC) on intensive care units. The validated data are plot against a reference golden standard, knowing the results obtained through the validation team.
  2. To evaluate the accuracy of nosocomial infections declared to the ICU-surveillance.

Specific aims of the validation study are:

  1. To verify the exhaustiveness (completeness) of the denominators. Are all patients with a length of stay longer than 24 hours on an ICU, correctly declared?
  2. To measure the sensitivity of the surveillance. What is the proportion of persons with an acquired nosocomial infection, which has been declared to the national surveillance?
  3. To measure the specificity of the surveillance. What is the proportion of persons without an acquired nosocomial infection that following the definitions, have not been declared to the national surveillance?
  4. To identify methodological problems of the ICU surveillance protocol.
  5. To verify the organisation of the prevention of nosocomial infections in the ICU.
