National surveillance of occupational blood exposure

Why participating in the surveillance ?

The surveillance allows a standardised data collection in order to prevent needle stick injuries and blood and body fluid exposures. More specifically the surveillance seeks:

  • to identify the frequency of occupational blood exposure e.g. by job category, by object or procedure;
  • to target the circumstances and equipment that could increase the risk of needlesticks and exposure o body fluids;
  • to assess the effectiveness of engineering controls and work practices;
  • to make health care workers aware of the risk of blood exposure by a quick feedback of the results;
  • to obtain individual, regional and national epidemiological data;
  • to compare indicators and share successful prevention measures between hospitals;
  • to generate monthly, quarterly and yearly reports on occupational blood contact.
